Consumer Reports is a highly respected publication that reports its findings on a multitude of topics relevant to the consuming public. A copyrighted story in the May 2001 edition of Consumer Reports revealed the following:
Repair History - Central Cooling Systems
Any
central cooling system can have trouble because of how well the components were integrated, how well the system was installed, and how scrupulously it has been maintained. That's why you want to reduce the likelihood of trouble by choosing a reliable brand. Our brand repair histories have been quite consistent over the years, though they are not infallible predictors.
Repair rates for specific models may vary, and
systems can change in how they're designed and made.
The graph shows the percentage of systems that were ever repaired or had serious problems that were never resolved. (Heat pumps aren't included here.) Our data indicate that the three brands with the lowest repair rates were more reliable than the four brands with the highest repair rates. Differences of 3 or more points are meaningful.

Based on more than 51,500 responses to our 2000 Annual
Questionnaire, covering central cooling systems purchased between 1994 and 2000. Data have been standardized to eliminate differences among brands due to age and usage. MAY 2001 (C) CONSUMER REPORTS 35
